You need nothing more than a notebook and fifteen minutes. Here are the five steps to get your kakeibo running this very month, with a real example you can copy.
- Work out this month's income. Add up everything you'll receive: salary, side income, whatever. Use real figures, not optimistic ones.
- Set aside your savings first. Decide how much you want to save and subtract it before you think about spending. This is the gesture that defines kakeibo: savings aren't the leftovers, they come first.
- Split what's left across the 4 pillars. Your available money (income − savings) is divided among survival, wants, culture and extra. A starting split: 50/30/10/10.
- Log every expense. Each time you spend, note it in its pillar. On paper or in an app — what matters is consistency and the pause writing it creates.
- Reflect at month's end. Did you hit your savings goal? Which pillar got away? What will you change next month? Write it down. That minute is where the learning happens.
A real example
Picture income of €2,000 and a savings goal of €500. That leaves €1,500 available, split like this:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Income | €2,000 |
| Savings (off the top) | − €500 |
| Available | €1,500 |
| Survival (50%) | €750 |
| Wants (30%) | €450 |
| Culture (10%) | €150 |
| Extra (10%) | €150 |
Through the month you log each expense into its pillar and watch what's left in each. If "wants" hits €450 by the 20th, you know it's time to ease off.
A minimal template (copy it)
If you start on paper or a spreadsheet, these columns are all you need:
| Date | Description | Pillar | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jul 3 | Weekly groceries | Survival | €62.40 |
| Jul 5 | Dinner with friends | Wants | €28.00 |
| Jul 8 | Book | Culture | €19.90 |
The most common beginner mistake
Quitting after three days because a surprise expense threw everything off. That's fine: that's what the "extra" pillar is for. Kakeibo doesn't chase perfection, it chases awareness. An imperfect month you actually logged beats a perfect month you only imagined.
